Choosing your coach

How to choose your coach?

The coach must be chosen based above all else on the trust that exists between him and the coachee. It is an essential element of coaching. The résumé in itself and the communication skills  are not enough in choosing a good coach. Don’t hesitate to meet at least three professionals and to ask them questions about their training and their work methods.

  1. The corporate coach must have a significant professional experience. He must be a renowned school or a university graduate, come from the business world, and occupied a leading position. The executive and manager coach must at least have worked in renowned companies and be able to understand the essential elements of business management.
  2. Having dealt with a PNL is an advantage, an international experience allows a more global vision.
  3. The coach must have undertaken a reflexion on himself (training sessions for personal development, psychotherapy, psychoanalysis), and be able to deal with at least three coaching tools (Process Communication Management, PNL, Transactional Analysis, systemic approach…).
  4. His specificity must be observed. Is the coach a confronting type? Does he have any reference in the line of business? Does he know about the coachee’s environment? The coach’s values must also be addressed in order to validate the equation according to the coachee’s needs and values.
  5. Any coach must have been trained in a renowned coaching school: l’Académie de coaching, HEC, Transformance, International Mozaic, Médiat-coaching…
  6. He must be approved by a professional organization whose deontology charter he has adopted: – la Société française de coaching (SFcoach) : – l’International Coach Federation (ICF) : – l’Association européenne de coaching (AEC) : – le Syndicat des organismes de conseil (Syntec).
  7. As any counselling occupation, the coach must be supervized on a regular basis, by a peer whose contact details he can provide.
  8. Coaching is his unique (or main) activity, et he must have an experience of several years.
  9. During the first meeting, he must address his future mission in a methodical way, and commit to secrecy.
  10. At last, secrecy is an unavoidable element. The coach can never divulge any information, to anyone.
